The Pious Woman – Guardian of the Hearth

Evhenyi Bakhmutskyi

Our society often diminishes the importance of housekeeping, but not God! To make our home a sacred priority—this is God's will for you, dear sisters. If your walls could speak, would they tell of a loving family, Of conversations, games, and laughter? Or would they describe a place to pass the night Before everyone scatters to their own affairs?

Let us strive to make our homes places of gathering And not allow the outer world to displace our family time. This may look like: prioritizing meals together, Preserving the tradition of family devotion, Or hosting an evening of family games.

Another aspect of tending the hearth concerns housekeeping— Cooking, cleaning, and the like. In modern families we most often divide duties between husband and wife, Yet our hearts remain centered on caring for the home, Even as we share the burden. Remember Proverbs 31:27: "She watches over the affairs of her household And does not eat the bread of idleness."

All who know Natalya Sergeevna well, my mother, know That she is an incredible expert in order and cleanliness, Just like her mother, my grandmother. And so I have always had to wrestle with the monster of disorder And learn to keep my things clean. I grow. And I say my wife grows in this too! I see my spouse become better and better with each passing year! I think she has already accumulated many life-hacks For housekeeping, to spend less time on cleaning!

Sometimes those women who labor at home struggle To be home not only in body, but in soul. Debi Pearl describes this phenomenon well: "Modern inventions allow a woman to be at home Yet not to be a steward of the home. Our body may be at home, but our spirit may be absent Thanks to the telephone or computer. You cannot be stewards of your own home And of all other people's homes as well."

"To be a steward of the home" is more than simply being there; It means being bound to the home with all your heart. A good helpmate invents many creative activities That inspire and develop children. She guards her home from the intrusion of alien influence, And she always watches over the children To prevent them from inventing evil themselves. Neither she nor her children will sit idle. Wishing to ease her husband's life, she herself will paint the corridor walls And trim the grass on the lawn. She will be frugal in her spending And teach her children to love by serving their father. She will care for the home so that for the father returning, This place becomes a refuge, full of peace, love, and order.

Proverbs 14:1 is an excellent reminder of this: "The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish tears it down with her hands."
