Christ Seeks Not What Is Ours, But Us

Leonyd Shatokhyn

He seeks not what is ours, He seeks us— This is the essence of God's word, The apostles' simple, artless witness, A meaning by the humble heard.

But many wise men could not see How Godliness dwelt in common flesh, That He revealed the Father's majesty, That He and God were one—not enmeshed.

He was misunderstood, for He refused All comfort, riches, worldly gain, Though He could claim them, though He could choose To take an earthly kingdom's reign.

They cast Him out, condemned Him then Because His will was not their own, Because He did not grace such men With power to rule a mortal throne.

Because He was informal, plain, And did not spurn the world's rejected, To those not yet by love's domain, He knelt and washed their feet, protected.

Centuries have passed, yet still today Jesus comes with love to aid, He seeks not what is ours, I say— We cost Him dearly, bought with blood He paid.
