Rain, Like Fate

Maryna Hlasko

Rain, like fate, all night was battering the doors, Knocking at windows, pounding at the walls, And howling with wind, rolling on the ground, And hurling itself against the glass with violent force…

It came in torrents like a heavenly avalanche, Stood as a wall, cutting off all paths. It wept, it moaned and thrashed against the asphalt, And would not let us sleep, raging mad through the night…

It tore the leaves away, whipped the trees, Through cracks it cursed while running by… It slammed the doors in wild frenzy, Sobbed convulsively and raved in delirium.

All night it would not rest, frightening with clouds, Then having wept itself out—gasped as it fled, And like a child wiping away its tears, Grew silent in exhaustion on the floor…
