The Longest Night of the Year

The longest night of the year And the shortest day… And pain at every step! War! War marches on!!! How heavy, how unbearable: Fire and blood and horror… All stubble broken— And where is it…the border? No feeling, no thought, Only a glance—glass. Winter's patterns… And there was no summer…

And instead of words—dots, Three dots, like a zero, And a silent cry suddenly About this terrible war, About collective madness, About the frenzy of the masses. They walk as if on a blade These souls and… darkness… The longest night of the century And there is no light Blood and tears are spilled… And blade… and darkness… O Lord! How long? Stop this madness Thou! I beg: grant us that peace, That shines in darkness. The longest day of the century Give to us, the powerless! Already on the ruins—Summer! The war has ended!
