Vera Savchenko

Vera Savchenko
Vera Savchenko (maiden name Zinkovskaya) was born on January 10, 1956, in the village of Starye Kodaki. She was the third child in a family of five children. During her school years, Vera loved to read Russian classics, and she was especially interested in poetry. From childhood, she attended Christian services and recited memorized poems. These were times of atheism, and there was a catastrophic shortage of Christian literature. Children and young people bought thick notebooks and manually copied poems from each other. Vera understood – it was necessary to fill the need with her own efforts. She made her first attempts at writing while still in school. In 1981, Vera married a fellow believer, Vladimir Savchenko; they had three children, all of whom are Christians and have been baptized according to their faith. Vera and her husband have 10 grandsons and 6 granddaughters. In 1998, the family immigrated to the USA, and Vera found herself in the same country as her favorite poetess, Vera Sergeevna Kushnir.
Vera Savchenko dared to send her poems to Vera Kushnir to find out if she should continue to engage in creative work. Before, she had never shown her poems to anyone and had not been published anywhere. With bated breath, she waited for a response from the famous poetess and received the answer: “Write.” Of course, Kushnir pointed out some shortcomings to her young colleague, and Vera was happy to work on her mistakes. She tackled the work with great zeal and after that was no longer afraid to recite poems in Church and send them to the newspaper “Our Days,” where they were always published.
