Nykolai Shalatovskyi

Nikolai Shalatovsky is one of the few modern poets who with his fiery word truly “burns the hearts of people.” He was born on August 2, 1945, in the Moscow suburb of Reutovo in the family of an employee. From very early childhood, Nikolai experienced all the bitterness of poverty and humiliation. The reason for this was his mother’s conversion to the Lord. In 1949, she made a covenant with Jesus Christ, as a result of which her husband left her, leaving five children without means of subsistence. From the age of fourteen, Nikolai began his working life, working as a lathe operator at a factory. “At that time,” Nikolai recounted, “my fate oscillated in the choice between the noose, prison, and the insane asylum.” In the summer of 1968, driven to despair by powerlessness in the face of his own vices, Nikolai met with youth from the Evangelical Christian-Baptist community and soon dedicated his life to serving God and his neighbors. The day after his repentance, he felt a desire, previously unknown to him, to write poems, which immediately gained universal recognition among believing youth… “It is precisely in this naked, bloodied poetic truth that the secret of the poetry that resurrects to life of our brother in Christ is hidden,” says poet and journalist Peter Abrashkin about his friend.
